Frequently Asked Questions
About Hei Kitani
What is Hei Kitani?
Hei Kitani creates thoughtfully designed linen pieces for little wonders.
Our bonnets are designed with a timeless, reversible style, bringing together soft colours, playful details and heirloom-inspired design. Each piece is made in small batches with the hope that it will be treasured, worn and remembered.
What does “Hei Kitani” mean?
Hei Kitani is a name rooted in grace, heritage and the places we call home.
“Hei” means grace, while “Kitani” means linen in Swahili.
Hei Kitani was born from a love for childhood, thoughtful design and the beauty of pieces that can be treasured for years to come. Inspired by our connection to Singapore and Tanzania, our first collection brings together subtle nods to these two places through gentle colours, nature inspired details and timeless linen.
Created in Australia, Hei Kitani is our little way of celebrating the wonder of childhood, creating pieces that are beautiful today, yet meaningful enough to be passed down tomorrow.

Our Bonnets
Are your bonnets reversible?
Yes! Each Hei Kitani bonnet is designed to be reversible, giving you two different looks in one little piece.
Please take care when turning the bonnet inside out to avoid pulling or stressing the stitching.
What sizes are available?
Our bonnets currently come in three sizes:
-
0–6 months: 36–42 cm
-
6–12 months: 42–46 cm
-
12–24 months: 46–49 cm
We recommend measuring your little one's head before purchasing and choosing the size that best corresponds with their head circumference.
As every baby is wonderfully different, these measurements are intended as a guide rather than a guarantee of fit.
How should I choose a size if my baby is between sizes?
If your little one is between sizes, we recommend considering their current head circumference rather than age alone.
If you are unsure, please contact us before ordering and we'd be happy to help you choose.
Is linen suitable for babies?
Linen is naturally lightweight and breathable, making it a beautiful fabric for warm-weather wear.
However, every baby is different. Always consider the weather, your child's individual needs and the conditions around them when deciding what they should wear.
Hei Kitani bonnets are designed as an accessory and are not a substitute for appropriate sun protection, shade or supervision.
Safety
Are Hei Kitani bonnets safe for babies?
Our bonnets are designed with babies and young children in mind, and we take product quality and construction seriously.
However, no baby accessory should be considered risk-free.
Our bonnets include ties, which require particular care around babies and young children. Always ensure the bonnet is appropriately fitted and that the ties are securely fastened without being excessively tight.
Never leave a baby or young child unattended while wearing the bonnet.
Remove the bonnet during sleep and whenever it may become caught, snagged or otherwise present a risk.
Please inspect the bonnet before each use and discontinue use if you notice loose stitching, damaged fabric, detached components or any other deterioration.
Can my baby sleep in the bonnet?
No.
Our bonnets are not intended for sleep.
Please remove the bonnet before your baby sleeps, including naps.
Can my baby wear the bonnet in a car seat, pram or carrier?
The bonnet should not interfere with the safe use or fit of a car seat, harness or other safety equipment.
Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for your child's car seat, pram or carrier and remove the bonnet if it interferes with safe positioning or restraint.
Can the bonnet protect my baby from the sun?
The bonnet provides coverage for areas such as the face, ears and neck, but it should not be relied upon as the sole form of sun protection.
For babies and young children, combine appropriate clothing with shade and other recommended sun-protection measures.
Hei Kitani does not make a specific UPF or SPF protection claim unless the relevant product has been independently tested to support that claim.
What should I check before each use?
Before putting the bonnet on your little one, check that:
-
The bonnet is the correct size and fits comfortably.
-
The ties and stitching are secure.
-
There are no loose threads or damaged seams.
-
There are no loose or detachable decorative elements.
-
The bonnet is clean and in good condition.
If anything appears damaged or unsafe, discontinue use.
Caring for Your Linen Bonnet
How do I wash my Hei Kitani bonnet?
We recommend caring for your bonnet gently to preserve the linen, colour and stitching.
Our general care recommendation:
-
Gentle cold wash
-
Wash with similar colours
-
Use a mild detergent
-
Do not bleach
-
Do not tumble dry
-
Air dry naturally
-
Cool iron if desired
Please always follow the specific care instructions supplied with your bonnet.
Will linen wrinkle?
Yes, and that's part of the beauty of linen.
Linen naturally develops a soft, relaxed texture and gentle wrinkles with wear. We believe these little imperfections are part of what makes each piece feel lived-in and loved.
If you prefer a smoother finish, lightly iron the bonnet on a cool setting.
Will my bonnet shrink?
Natural linen can experience some shrinkage, particularly when exposed to high heat.
To help preserve the original shape and size of your bonnet, we recommend cold washing and air drying and avoiding high heat.
Will the colours fade?
Linen can naturally change subtly over time with washing, sunlight and wear.
Gentle washing, mild detergent and avoiding prolonged direct sunlight can help preserve the colour and beauty of your bonnet.
How should I store my bonnet?
Make sure the bonnet is completely dry before storing.
For longer-term storage, keep it somewhere cool, dry and away from prolonged direct sunlight.

Product Care & Responsibility
What happens if my bonnet becomes damaged through use?
Please discontinue use if your bonnet becomes damaged, particularly if there are loose threads, damaged ties, detached components or compromised stitching.
Normal wear and tear is different from a manufacturing fault.

Are Hei Kitani products handmade?
Our pieces are produced in small batches with careful attention to detail.
Because natural linen has its own texture and character, slight variations in colour, texture and appearance may occur. These are natural characteristics of the material and may mean that your piece is subtly different from another.
